How to play Muflis
Muflis is Teen Patti turned upside down. The betting is the same as ever, but the weakest hand takes the pot, so the trail of aces that wins almost any classic game is the worst hand you can hold. Here is how the reversed rankings work, how ties are settled, and how to judge your cards.
What changes in Muflis
Muflis, also written Mufliss and sometimes called lowball Teen Patti, keeps every classic hand category and simply reverses their order. The word means a poor or penniless person in Hindi and Urdu, which suits a game where the poorest hand is the richest one.
You still sort a hand into trail, pure sequence, sequence, colour, pair or high card exactly as you would in a classic game. The only question that changes is which end of the list you want to be at. In Muflis you want a plain, unconnected high card hand made of small cards.
Muflis rankings
Best first. The categories are the classic ones in reverse, and inside each category the lower hand wins.
- 1. High cardNo pair, run or colour · 74.39% of hands5♠3♦2♣
The best Muflis hands. Compare the highest card first; the lower one wins, then the next card. 5-3-2 in mixed suits is the best hand. The ace is always high.
- 2. PairTwo of a kind · 16.94% of hands2♣2♠3♥
The lower pair wins; with equal pairs the lower odd card wins.
- 3. ColourFlush · 4.96% of hands5♦3♦2♦
Three of one suit, not in a row. The lower colour wins, highest card first.
- 4. SequenceRun in mixed suits · 3.26% of hands4♠3♦2♣
4-3-2 is the best run. Runs keep their classic order reversed, so A-2-3 is the second-worst and A-K-Q the worst.
- 5. Pure sequenceRun in one suit · 0.22% of hands4♥3♥2♥
A run in one suit, ranked like the mixed runs. Worse than any mixed run.
- 6. TrailThree of a kind · 0.24% of handsA♠A♥A♦
The worst hands of all. 2-2-2 is the least bad; A-A-A is the worst hand in the game.
Best first: the lowest hand wins. The ace is always high. Suits never break a tie.

Who wins? Worked examples
Each pair of hands below is compared by the Muflis rules.
- 8♠5♦3♣Eight highK♥K♦2♣Pair of Kings
First hand wins. A high card hand beats any pair, however low the pair.
- 9♠6♦4♣Nine high9♥7♣2♦Nine high
First hand wins. Both are nine high, so the second card decides, and the six is lower than the seven. The two in the other hand never comes into it.
- 7♥4♥2♥Colour, Seven highQ♠Q♦J♣Pair of Queens
Second hand wins. Three cards of one suit make a colour, and a pair beats a colour in Muflis.
- A♠5♦3♣Ace highK♠Q♦10♣King high
Second hand wins. The ace stays high, so A-5-3 is ace high, the weakest kind of high card. King high beats it.
- 2♠2♥2♦Trail of TwosA♠K♠Q♠Pure sequence, A-K-Q
Second hand wins. Any pure sequence beats any trail, even the classic best run against the classic worst trail.
How to compare two Muflis hands
Look at the category first. If the categories differ, the one nearer the top of the Muflis list wins, whatever the cards inside it.
If both hands are in the same category, compare them the classic way and give the pot to the lower hand. High cards and colours are compared from the highest card down: 9-6-4 beats 9-7-2 because the six is lower than the seven. Pairs compare the pair first and then the odd card, so 3-3-2 beats 3-3-5, and both lose to 2-2-A. Trails are compared by rank, so three twos is the least bad trail and three aces the worst hand in the game.
Runs keep their classic order reversed. 4-3-2 is the best run and A-K-Q the worst. A-2-3, which is the second-best run in a classic game, is the second-worst run in Muflis.
Why A-2-3 is not a low hand
Players coming from other lowball games often expect A-2-3 to be the dream hand. In Muflis it is not, for two reasons. The ace always counts high, and the three cards form a run, which puts them in one of the worst categories. Against almost any plain high card hand, A-2-3 loses.
If you want the lowest possible cards, you want them broken: 5-3-2 in mixed suits is the best hand because 4-3-2 would be a run.
Betting, show and side show in Muflis
Nothing about the betting changes. Everyone posts the boot, blind players bet the stake and seen players twice the stake, and you can pack at any turn. A show is possible once two players are left, and a seen player can ask the previous seen player for a side show while three or more remain.
When hands are compared, in a show, a side show or at the pot limit, the lower Muflis hand wins. If the two hands are exactly equal, the player who asked for the show or the side show loses, just as in classic play. Equal hands at a pot-limit showdown split the pot.
Muflis tips
- Small, broken cards are what you want. Check that your low cards do not join into a run (5-4-3) or share a suit, because either one pushes the hand down the list.
- Treat any pair as a warning and any trail as a hand to pack. A pair of twos only beats about a quarter of all Muflis hands.
- An ace or king is a heavy card. A-5-3 is weaker than K-Q-10, and both beat fewer than half of all hands.
- About three hands in four are plain high card hands, the best Muflis category, so a random blind hand is better placed here than in a classic game. Staying blind for a round or two while the stake is low makes sense.
- Retrain your eye at the show: a colour looks strong, but in Muflis it loses to any pair.
Where versions differ
Some home games count the ace low in Muflis or call A-2-3 the lowest run. This table follows the online apps: the classic order is simply reversed and the ace stays high.
Muflis questions
Is Muflis the same as lowball?
Yes. Muflis is the Indian name for lowball Teen Patti: the classic rankings are reversed and the weakest hand wins.
What is the best hand in Muflis?
5-3-2 in mixed suits. It is the lowest high card hand that is not a run and not a colour.
Is A-2-3 a good hand in Muflis?
No. The ace counts high and A-2-3 is a run, so it is the second-worst run and loses to every high card, pair and colour.
Does a pair beat a trail in Muflis?
Yes. A trail is the worst category in Muflis, so every pair, colour and run beats it.
Can I play Muflis free?
Yes, on the table at the top of this page. It plays Muflis against four computer opponents with play chips only. There is no real money, nothing to buy and nothing to cash out.
