How to play AK47 Teen Patti

AK47 is classic Teen Patti with sixteen jokers. Every Ace, King, Four and Seven in the deck is wild, which is where the name comes from. The rankings and the betting do not change, but the hands that reach a show do: trails turn up all the time and a plain pair rarely holds.

How the jokers work

A joker has no value of its own. When hands are compared, each joker becomes the card that gives its owner the strongest possible hand, any rank and any suit.

With one joker, look at your other two cards. If they are a pair, the joker makes a trail. If they can belong to the same run, the joker completes the best run they fit, and it is a pure sequence if the two cards share a suit. If they share a suit but cannot make a run, the joker makes a colour, playing as the highest card it can. Otherwise it pairs your higher card.

With two jokers you always have a trail, matching your third card, because a trail beats everything else. Three jokers are three aces.

Because every ace and king is a joker, you can never hold a natural ace or king in AK47. The highest natural card is the queen, so Q-J-9 is the best hand without a joker.

AK47 rankings

Best first, with how often each hand is dealt in AK47. Starred cards are jokers. Compare these odds with a classic game, where a trail comes about once in 425 hands.

  1. 1. TrailThree of a kind · 26.15% of handsQ♥4♥7♣

Two jokers always make a trail with your third card, here three Queens. Three jokers are three aces, the best hand.

  2. 2. Pure sequenceRun in one suit · 3.24% of hands9♥10♥7♣

A joker fills a run: 9 and 10 of hearts with a joker make J-10-9 of hearts.

  3. 3. SequenceRun in mixed suits · 10.37% of hands9♥10♦4♣

A run in mixed suits, made or completed with a joker.

  4. 4. ColourFlush · 8.71% of hands9♣2♣K♦

Two cards of one suit and a joker make a colour, the joker playing as the ace.

  5. 5. PairTwo of a kind · 29.54% of hands9♣2♦A♥

A joker pairs your higher card. Natural pairs are weak in AK47.

  6. 6. High cardNo joker · 21.99% of handsQ♠J♦9♣

A hand with no joker and nothing else, compared card by card as usual.

Best first. Starred cards are jokers. A joker hand ties the same natural hand.

Who wins? Worked examples

Each pair of hands below is compared by the AK47 rules. Starred cards in the pictures are jokers.

  1. Q♥4♥7♣Trail of Queens (2 jokers)
    A♠2♠2♥Trail of Twos (1 joker)

First hand wins. Two jokers make three Queens. The other hand's ace turns a pair of twos into three twos, and the higher trail wins.

  2. 9♥10♥7♣Pure sequence, Jack high (1 joker)
    J♠J♦5♣Pair of Jacks

First hand wins. The Seven fills the run: J-10-9 of hearts, a pure sequence, beats a natural pair.

  3. 9♣2♣K♦Colour, Ace high (1 joker)
    Q♠J♦9♣Queen high

First hand wins. Two clubs and a joker make a colour with the joker as the ace, which beats a plain Queen high.

  4. 4♠7♦2♣Trail of Twos (2 jokers)
    Q♠J♠10♠Pure sequence, Queen high

First hand wins. Two jokers make three twos, and the lowest trail still beats the best natural run.

  5. 6♠6♦4♣Trail of Sixes (1 joker)
    6♥6♣K♦Trail of Sixes (1 joker)

Equal hands. Both make three Sixes. On equal hands the player who asked for the show loses.

Betting, show and side show in AK47

Nothing about the betting changes. Everyone posts the boot, blind players bet the stake and seen players twice the stake, and you can pack at any turn. A show is possible once two players are left, and a seen player can ask the previous seen player for a side show while three or more remain.

When hands are compared, every joker is played at its best. A trail made with jokers is worth exactly the same as a natural trail of that rank, so ties are more common than in a classic game. On equal hands the player who asked for the show or side show loses, and equal hands at a pot-limit showdown split the pot.

AK47 tips

  • Count your jokers before anything else. Two or more means a trail, and a trail beats about three hands in four even when it is three twos.
  • A natural pair is only a middling hand: a pair of Queens beats fewer than half of all AK47 hands.
  • A joker plus two cards of one suit that sit close together is a pure sequence. Those are worth a raise.
  • With jokers in two hands out of three, expect the other players to hold something. Be slower to call a show with a pair than you would be in a classic game.
  • Blind play is cheaper and your chances of a joker are high, so staying blind for a turn or two is reasonable while the stake is low.

Where versions differ

A few tables rank a natural hand above the same hand made with jokers. Here they are equal, and on equal hands the player who asked for the show loses, as in classic.

AK47 questions

Which cards are wild in AK47?

Every Ace, King, Four and Seven, in all four suits: sixteen jokers in a 52-card deck.

Does a natural trail beat a trail made with jokers?

Not at our table. A hand made with jokers ranks exactly like the same hand dealt naturally, so two trails of the same rank tie. A few home games rank the natural hand higher; agree on it before you play.

What is the best hand in AK47?

Three aces, which in AK47 always means three jokers, since every ace is a joker.

How often do you get a joker in AK47?

About 68 hands in 100 hold at least one joker, and about one hand in four is a trail.

Can I play AK47 Teen Patti free?
