How to play Lallan Kallan

Lallan Kallan, also called Lallan pe Kallan or Kallan pe Lallan, is a Diwali favourite where colour decides everything. Lallan is the red one and Kallan the black one: with two cards of one colour and one of the other, the odd card out is your joker. Deal yourself three cards of one colour, though, and your hand is dead.

How the odd colour joker works

The names play on lal, red, and kala, black. Look at the colours of your three cards. If two are red and one is black, the black card is your joker; if two are black and one is red, the red card is. The joker stands for whatever card makes your best hand, so a pair with a card of the other colour beside it is always a trail.

With your two cards of the same colour, the joker plays as in AK47: two cards that fit a run make the best run they can, two cards of one suit make a colour with the joker as the ace, and anything else becomes a pair of your higher card. Hearts and diamonds are both red but are different suits, so the King and Queen of hearts make a pure sequence with the joker, while the King of hearts and Queen of diamonds make a plain one.

Dead hands

Three cards of one colour have no odd card, and so no joker. That hand is dead. It loses to every hand that has a joker, and once you have seen it you must pack: folding is the only move left to you.

A blind player does not know what they hold, so a dead hand can stay in while its owner plays blind, and it even takes the pot if everyone else packs. At a show or a side show it always loses. Two dead hands are equal, and as ever the player who asked for the show loses on equal hands.

Lallan Kallan rankings

Best first, with how often each hand is dealt. Starred cards are jokers. Every live hand has exactly one joker, so there is no plain high card, and a dead hand ranks below everything.

  1. 1. TrailThree of a kind · 3.06% of handsA♥A♦K♣

A black card with two red Aces makes three Aces. A pair and a card of the other colour always make a trail.

  2. 2. Pure sequenceRun in one suit · 11.76% of handsK♥Q♥2♠

The black Two joins the King and Queen of hearts for A-K-Q of hearts.

  3. 3. SequenceRun in mixed suits · 11.76% of handsK♠Q♣2♥

A run from two suits of one colour, here spades and clubs, with the red joker.

  4. 4. ColourFlush · 24.94% of hands9♥4♥2♠

Two cards of one suit and the joker make a colour, the joker playing as the ace.

  5. 5. PairTwo of a kind · 24.94% of hands9♥4♦2♠

Anything else: the joker pairs your higher card. Hearts and diamonds are both red but different suits.

  6. 6. Dead handAll one colour · 23.53% of handsA♠K♠Q♠

Three cards of one colour have no joker. The hand is dead: it loses to every live hand, and once you have seen it you must pack.

Who wins? Worked examples

Each pair of hands below is compared by the Lallan Kallan rules. Starred cards in the pictures are jokers.

  1. 2♠2♣9♥Trail of Twos (1 joker)
    A♥K♦Q♣Sequence, A-K-Q (1 joker)

First hand wins. The red Nine joins two black Twos for three Twos. The other hand's black Queen only completes A-K-Q, and a trail beats any run.

  2. K♥Q♥2♠Pure sequence, A-K-Q (1 joker)
    K♠Q♣2♥Sequence, A-K-Q (1 joker)

First hand wins. Both make A-K-Q. The King and Queen of hearts share a suit, so theirs is a pure sequence; spades and clubs are both black but different suits.

  3. 3♥2♦5♠Sequence, A-2-3 (1 joker)
    A♠K♠Q♠Dead hand (one colour)

First hand wins. A-K-Q of spades would be the best run in a classic game, but three black cards are dead. Even 3-2 with a black joker, which makes A-2-3, beats it.

  4. 9♥4♦2♠Pair of Nines (1 joker)
    Q♥7♦2♠Pair of Queens (1 joker)

Second hand wins. Hearts and diamonds are different suits, so neither hand makes a colour. Each joker pairs the higher card, and Queens beat Nines.

  5. A♠K♣9♠Dead hand (one colour)
    2♥5♦7♥Dead hand (one colour)

Equal hands. Both hands are one colour, so both are dead and equal. The player who asked for the show loses.

Betting, show and side show in Lallan Kallan

Nothing about the betting changes. Everyone posts the boot, blind players bet the stake and seen players twice the stake, and you can pack at any turn. A show is possible once two players are left, and a seen player can ask the previous seen player for a side show while three or more remain.

When hands are compared, the joker is played at its best and a joker hand is worth the same as the natural hand it makes. A dead hand loses to any live hand; two dead hands are equal, and on equal hands the player who asked for the show or side show loses.

Lallan Kallan at home

Families who play Lallan Kallan at Diwali often deal more cards, five, six or seven, and turn whole sets of two red cards and a black one (or two black and a red) into jokers, while a hand of one colour still has to pack. Our table deals the three-card game the rule sites describe, which plays at the speed of a normal Teen Patti hand.

Lallan Kallan tips

  • Check the colours before anything else. Three of one colour means pack, however good the cards look.
  • A pair with the odd colour beside it is a trail. Trails come about 3 hands in 100 and almost nothing beats them.
  • Two cards of one suit and the odd colour make at least a colour, which beats about half of all hands.
  • A pair made by the joker is a weak hand here: a pair of Nines beats fewer than a third of all hands.
  • Playing blind is riskier than usual: one hand in four is dead, and you will not know until you look.

Where versions differ

Home tables also play a Lallan Kallan series with five to seven cards, where whole sets of two red cards and a black one become jokers. This table deals the three-card game the rule sites describe.

Lallan Kallan questions

What is Lallan Kallan in Teen Patti?

A Teen Patti variation where the card of the odd colour in your hand is your joker. Lallan is red and Kallan black.

Is Lallan pe Kallan the same game?

Yes. Lallan pe Kallan and Kallan pe Lallan are other names for it, after the two ways a hand can split: one black card with two red ones, or one red card with two black ones.

What happens if all my cards are the same colour?

Your hand is dead. It has no joker, loses to every other hand, and once you have seen it you must pack.

Do hearts and diamonds count as one suit?

No. They are both red, so neither is ever the odd colour beside the other, but they are different suits: a pure sequence or a colour still needs a single suit.

Can I play Lallan Kallan free?

Yes, on the table at the top of this page. It plays Lallan Kallan with play chips only, against four computer opponents. There is no real money, nothing to buy and nothing to cash out.
