How to play 555 Teen Patti
555, also called Closest to 555, is a cousin of 999. Your three cards become a three-digit number, but instead of aiming as high as you can, you aim for 555, from above or below. You put the digits in the best order, and twice in a hand you may swap a card for a new one.
How to read a 555 hand
Give each card its value, as in 999. Then put the three digits in the order that lands nearest 555. With a Six, a Four and a King the choices include 604, 640, 460 and 406; 604 is 49 away and is your hand.
The first digit matters most, so you want a Five in front, then another Five, then a Five again. Next best is a Four or a Six in front, as close to 555 as the other digits allow. About one hand in five holds at least one Five.
- A = 1
- 2 to 9 = face value
- 10, J, Q, K = 0
Swapping a card
On each of your first two turns you may swap one card before you bet: tap or click the card you want to change, and the dealer replaces it with the top card of the deck. The swap is free and you keep your turn, so you still bet, pack or ask for a show afterwards. You must have seen your cards to swap, so a player who stays blind for two turns gives up both swaps.
Swap the card that does least for you. With 5-5-K you hold 550, five away; swapping the King for any card from Ace to Nine brings you closer, and a Ten or a court card leaves you where you were. With 5-5-4, which is 554, a swap is more likely to hurt than help.
555 hands
A ladder of 555 hands, best first.
- 1. 555Three Fives5♠5♥5♦
The best hand in the game.
- 2. 554One below5♣4♦5♥
One away from 555, below it. You choose the order of your digits.
- 3. 556One above6♠5♦5♣
Also one away. At the same distance the lower number wins, so 554 beats 556.
- 4. 550A zero5♠K♦5♥
Tens and court cards count 0: 5-5-K is 550, five away.
- 5. 560Five aboveQ♣6♥5♦
Five away too, but above 555, so it loses to 550.
- 6. 000All zerosK♠Q♦J♣
555 away, the worst hand. Three Nines (999) and three Aces (111) are both 444 away.
A = 1, 2 to 9 face value, 10, J, Q, K = 0. Nearest 555 wins; at the same distance, the lower number.

Who wins? Worked examples
Each pair of hands below is compared by the 555 rules.
- 5♠5♦4♣Score 554 (1 away)5♥5♣6♦Score 556 (1 away)
First hand wins. 554 against 556. Both are one away, and at the same distance the lower number wins.
- 6♠4♦K♣Score 604 (49 away)4♥9♦9♣Score 499 (56 away)
First hand wins. 604 is 49 away. The best the other hand can do is 499, which is 56 away; its pair of Nines counts for nothing.
- 9♠9♦9♣Score 999 (444 away)A♠A♦A♣Score 111 (444 away)
Second hand wins. 999 and 111 are both 444 from 555, so the lower number, 111, wins. Three Nines win 999, not this game.
- 5♠2♦K♣Score 520 (35 away)Q♥6♠3♦Score 603 (48 away)
First hand wins. 520 is 35 away and 603 is 48 away.
- 5♠6♦K♣Score 560 (5 away)6♥5♣Q♦Score 560 (5 away)
Equal hands. Both make 560, and suits never break a tie. The player who asked for the show loses.
Betting, show and side show in 555
Nothing about the betting changes. Everyone posts the boot, blind players bet the stake and seen players twice the stake, and you can pack at any turn. A show is possible once two players are left, and a seen player can ask the previous seen player for a side show while three or more remain.
When hands are compared, the number nearer 555 wins, and at the same distance the lower number. Equal numbers are equal hands: the player who asked for the show or side show loses, and equal hands at a pot-limit showdown split the pot.
555 and 999
Both games turn cards into numbers with the same values. In 999 the digits always go highest first, because the highest number is always the closest to 999. In 555 the order is up to you, which makes the middle and last digits matter: 5-5-K is 550, while 9-9-9, the best hand in 999, is one of the worst here.
555 tips
- Fives are the cards to hold. A Five in front is already close, and two Fives with almost anything is excellent.
- Use your swaps. They are free, and only a hand within a few points of 555 is worth keeping as it is. Swap the card that sits furthest from a Five.
- Look early. A blind player cannot swap, so seeing on your first turn keeps both swaps.
- Below beats above at the same distance: 550 beats 560, and 499 beats 611.
- Tens and court cards count 0, which helps only as the last digit: 550 is close, 505 and 055 are not.
Where versions differ
Home games differ on the ace (some count it 0), on whether a swap costs a chip or two, and on ties. This table counts the ace as 1, as in 999, makes swaps free, and gives an equal distance to the lower number.
555 questions
What is 555 in Teen Patti?
A Teen Patti variation where your three cards make a number and the hand closest to 555, above or below, wins.
What is an Ace worth in 555?
1, as in 999. Some home games count it 0 instead; agree on it before you play.
Can I change the order of my cards?
Yes. You arrange the three digits however you like, and our table always uses the order that comes closest to 555.
What if two hands are the same distance from 555?
The lower number wins, so 550 beats 560. Two hands with the same number are equal, and the player who asked for the show loses.
How does the card swap work?
On each of your first two turns, once you have seen your cards, you may swap one card for the top card of the deck before you bet. It is free and you keep your turn.
Can I play 555 free?
Yes, on the table at the top of this page. It plays 555 with play chips only, against four computer opponents. There is no real money, nothing to buy and nothing to cash out.
