How to play 999 Teen Patti

999 throws the usual Teen Patti rankings away. Your three cards become a three-digit number, and the number closest to 999 wins the pot. Trails, runs and colours count for nothing; nines count for everything.

How to read a 999 hand

Give each card its value, then write the three values down from highest to lowest. A Nine, a King and an Ace are 9, 0 and 1, so the hand is 910. Seven, Seven, Three is 773. Ten, Jack, Five is 500. Three aces are only 111.

Because the digits always go highest first, the first digit is your best card and decides most hands. Any hand holding a Nine beats every hand without one, and only about one hand in five holds a Nine.

  • A = 1
  • 2 to 9 = face value
  • 10, J, Q, K = 0

999 hands

A ladder of 999 hands, best first.

  1. 1. 999Three Nines9♠9♥9♦

The best hand in the game.

  2. 2. 990Two Nines and a zero9♣9♦K♠

Tens and court cards count 0, so 9-9-K is 990.

  3. 3. 951Highest digit first5♣A♦9♥

Your digits are always arranged highest first: 9, 5 and an ace make 951.

  4. 4. 910Ace counts 1A♠K♦9♣

The ace is worth 1 and the King 0, so A-K-9 is 910.

  5. 5. 888A trail is just a number8♠8♥8♦

Trails, runs, colours and pairs mean nothing here: three Eights lose to 910.

  6. 6. 000All zerosK♠Q♦J♣

Three cards worth 0, the worst hand.

A = 1, 2 to 9 face value, 10, J, Q, K = 0. Equal numbers tie.

Who wins? Worked examples

Each pair of hands below is compared by the 999 rules.

  1. 9♠9♦2♣Score 992
    9♥8♥7♥Score 987

First hand wins. 992 beats 987. The pure sequence counts for nothing.

  2. 9♠5♦3♣Score 953
    8♠8♦8♣Score 888

First hand wins. 953 beats 888: the Nine decides it, and three Eights are just a number.

  3. A♠K♦9♣Score 910
    9♥A♦2♣Score 921

Second hand wins. 910 against 921. The King counts 0, so the two is worth more.

  4. 6♠6♦5♣Score 665
    7♣K♦Q♥Score 700

Second hand wins. 665 against 700. A single Seven beats two Sixes, because the first digit comes first.

  5. K♠Q♦9♣Score 900
    10♥J♣9♦Score 900

Equal hands. Both make 900, and suits never break a tie. The player who asked for the show loses.

Betting, show and side show in 999

Nothing about the betting changes. Everyone posts the boot, blind players bet the stake and seen players twice the stake, and you can pack at any turn. A show is possible once two players are left, and a seen player can ask the previous seen player for a side show while three or more remain.

When hands are compared, the higher number wins. Equal numbers are equal hands: the player who asked for the show or side show loses, and equal hands at a pot-limit showdown split the pot.

999 tips

  • Your first digit is most of the story. Even the weakest hand starting with an Eight beats about 60 hands in 100, and the weakest starting with a Nine about 78.
  • Tens and court cards are dead weight. Sixteen of the 52 cards count 0, so a zero in the middle of your number costs a lot.
  • Forget what classic Teen Patti taught you about trails and runs. 8-8-8 loses to any Nine.
  • A hand of 500 or less beats fewer than a quarter of all hands; there is little point paying to see it through.

Where versions differ

Some home games add the three values instead, or let you put the digits in any order. This table uses the app rule: the digits always go highest first, so closest to 999 is simply the highest number.

999 questions

What is a King worth in 999?

Nothing. Tens, Jacks, Queens and Kings all count 0, and the ace counts 1.

Can a hand go over 999?

No. Each digit is at most 9, so the highest number is 999 and closest to 999 always means the highest number.

Does a trail count in 999?

No. Trails, runs, colours and pairs mean nothing: three Eights are simply 888.

What happens if two hands have the same number?

They are equal. The player who asked for the show loses, and at a pot-limit showdown the pot is split.

Can I play 999 Teen Patti free?
