How to play Hukam Teen Patti

In Hukam Teen Patti the turned-up card names a trump suit, and every other card of that suit is a joker for the hand. Twelve jokers make big hands common and every deal different. Here is how it works, how it differs from Joker, and how to play it well.

How the hukam works

Hukam, also written hukum, means a command. At Indian card tables it is also the everyday name for spades and, in games such as Court Piece, the word for the trump suit. Hukam Teen Patti borrows that idea: after the deal the dealer turns the next card of the deck face up, and its suit is the hukam for the hand.

Every other card of the hukam suit is a joker. If the Five of spades is turned up, every spade still in play is wild, from the two to the ace. The turned-up card itself belongs to nobody.

Jokers play as in AK47 and Joker: one joker turns a pair into a trail, completes the best run your other two cards fit, makes a colour with two cards of one suit, or pairs your higher card. Two jokers, which here simply means two cards of the hukam suit, make a trail of your third card. Three hukam cards are three aces.

Hukam or Joker: which is which?

Both games turn up a card after the deal. In Joker the card's rank is wild, so there are three jokers. In Hukam the card's suit is wild, so there are twelve. Apps and rule sites do not agree on the name: some describe a rank-wild game as Hukam. We play the suit version under the name Hukam, as hukam means the trump suit, and the rank version under the name Joker, so you can try both.

Hukam rankings

Best first, with how often each hand is dealt, averaged over every possible hukam card. In the examples a spade was turned up, so spades are jokers (starred).

  1. 1. TrailThree of a kind · 15.73% of handsK♠2♥2♦

A pair and a joker make a trail. In these examples a spade was turned up, so every spade is a joker.

  2. 2. Pure sequenceRun in one suit · 4.49% of handsA♥K♥9♠

A-K of hearts and a spade make A-K-Q of hearts.

  3. 3. SequenceRun in mixed suits · 10.03% of hands9♥10♦3♠

A run in mixed suits, here J-10-9.

  4. 4. ColourFlush · 13.11% of handsK♦6♦2♠

Two of a suit and a joker make a colour with the joker as the ace.

  5. 5. PairTwo of a kind · 25.07% of handsQ♥4♦7♠

A joker pairs your higher card, here two Queens.

  6. 6. High cardNo joker · 31.58% of handsA♥10♦6♣

No card of the hukam suit and nothing else.

Best first. Starred cards show jokers when a spade is the hukam.

Who wins? Worked examples

In every example below the Five of spades was turned up, so every other spade is a joker.

  1. K♠2♥2♦Trail of Twos (1 joker)
    A♥K♥Q♥Pure sequence, A-K-Q

First hand wins. The King of spades is a joker, so a pair of twos becomes three twos, and any trail beats a pure sequence.

  2. 9♠J♠3♥Trail of Threes (2 jokers)
    Q♥Q♦Q♣Trail of Queens

Second hand wins. Two spades make a trail, but only of your third card: three Threes lose to three Queens.

  3. A♥K♥9♠Pure sequence, A-K-Q (1 joker)
    A♦K♦Q♦Pure sequence, A-K-Q

Equal hands. The spade plays as the Queen of hearts. Both hands are A-K-Q in one suit, and equal hands tie.

  4. Q♥4♦7♠Pair of Queens (1 joker)
    J♥J♦A♣Pair of Jacks

First hand wins. The spade pairs the Queen, and a pair of Queens beats a pair of Jacks.

  5. K♦6♦2♠Colour, Ace high (1 joker)
    10♥9♣8♦Sequence, Ten high

Second hand wins. The joker makes a colour, but a natural run still beats a colour.

Betting, show and side show in Hukam

Nothing about the betting changes. Everyone posts the boot, blind players bet the stake and seen players twice the stake, and you can pack at any turn. A show is possible once two players are left, and a seen player can ask the previous seen player for a side show while three or more remain.

When hands are compared, every joker is played at its best and a joker hand is worth the same as the natural hand it makes. On equal hands the player who asked for the show or side show loses.

Hukam tips

  • Find the hukam suit in your hand first. One card of it is a joker; two make a trail.
  • Trails are common, so a low trail is good but not safe. Three twos beat about 84 hands in 100, three Queens nearly 96.
  • A natural pair of Kings only beats about half of all Hukam hands. Without a joker, be careful with pairs.
  • If your hand has no hukam card and nothing else, pack early: the others have many ways to beat you.

Where versions differ

Versions differ most here. Some apps play Hukam with the turned card's rank wild, which is our Joker game; we play the suit version, after hukum, the trump suit.

Hukam questions

What does hukam mean in Teen Patti?

Hukam means command, and at Indian card tables it names spades and the trump suit. In Hukam Teen Patti the turned-up card sets the trump suit, and that suit is wild.

How many jokers are there in Hukam?

Twelve: every card of the turned-up card's suit except the turned-up card itself.

Is Hukam the same as Joker Teen Patti?

Not here. In our Joker game the turned-up rank is wild, three jokers; in Hukam the turned-up suit is wild, twelve jokers. Some apps use the name Hukam for the rank version.

What beats what in Hukam?

The classic order: trail, pure sequence, sequence, colour, pair, high card. Jokers only change which hand you hold, not the order.

Can I play Hukam free?

Yes, on the table at the top of this page. It plays Hukam with play chips only, against four computer opponents. There is no real money.
